Would like non-pay Anti Virus
Hello,
I have used Symantec AV for years. I paid for each year and for each system. Back in 2005-2007 I was using Comcast's Free version of McAFee AV. This worked good until I switched to Verizon.
I'm now in need of AV. I still have Comcast's McaFee on my systems, but does not grab the latest DAT files as I do not subscribe to Comcast.
I don't see that Verizon has AV for there customers for free. And the cost for Symantec AV yearly is expensive.
Would like to see what Jiffers are doing for there AV solutions. I would like free AV, as long as it's not hacked. Maybe there is some easy to use open source AV out there.
Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I have been using AVG free for a few years. The only thing is sometimes the auto update doesn't seem to work and you have to do it manually .

Man... I knew I missed you guys. Smuckers... Ment.... been a long time...
Thanks for all the info.
Mentat... Comodo Firewall and Antivirus is now Comodo Internet Security. Would you recommend this total package. Or get AVG for AV and get Comodo for FW.

Re: Would like non-pay Anti Virus
I use Avira AntiVir Personal http://www.free-av.de/ on my laptop.
I use Avast! antivirus Home Edition on my wife's PC http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html.
I use to use AVG Free on my main PC http://www.avg.com/but upgraded to a 5 user AVG Anti-Virus 8 license to cover the PCs at work as well as my personal PC. I'm not sure you can get AVG for free anymore, they are currently only listing a 30 day trail version at the main website.
Non of these machines have ever suffered an infection since I installed the various anti-virus programs on them (although they've all had to quarantine the source of the occasional cold from time to time). They've each blocked virus attempts arriving by email, dumb downloads and P2P foolishness. You know, normal stuff. All in all each program performs fairly well and appear to be about equal in overall protection. They all are easier to use then Norton and have much smaller footprints.

Re: Would like non-pay Anti Virus
I use both AntiVir PE 8 and AVG Free 7.5 - the former for both resident and on demand scanning, the latter only for on demand purposes (in case I'd like a second opinion, one could say). In addition, I'd suggest to use some proper anti spyware tool like Spybot Search & Destroy. Whereas I'd regard an additional personal firewall as superfluous, if one already has the Windows firewall activated and is additionally protected by using a router with firewall function or at least NAT.

Badge,
yeah... they still do. goto download.com - that's where u can get it for free. My McAfee subscription just expired from Time Warner, and Cincy Bell doesnt provide any "free 12 or 15 months" with their package.
Switched to the free AVG and Spybot S&D for my system. So far - no regrets!!

Re: Would like non-pay Anti Virus
ALWB, WB: You can also get AVG Free from the manufacturer site, but then you need to go to free.avg.com instead of avg.com. Maybe that was yet another smart idea from the marketing guys, which may trick some inexperienced users into buying one of the non-free versions, who give up searching for the free version too quickly...
