Re: Vista Problems
I think the cards, themselves, are fine.
Its ATI's drivers & software that sux.
Like I said - had an ATI 650 Wonder TV Tuner & one of their internal cards b4 - and they were pathetic. The Hauppauges were better (thanxs, Mentat!). Along with some of the older Radeon graphix cards...
NVidia and GeForce all the way baby!!
Don't know how this turned into a graphics card thread - that (I dont believe) has anything to do with the crashes to desktop issue that is caused between Windows Vista & BF1942...
How easily we get distracted... (Where's that shiny nickel for Tissueman??)...heehee

Re: Vista Problems
Ya sorry for goin off topic there for a bit....
I am considering going to Vista on my next build so is this ctd problem just with BF1942 or are there other games it affects?
I know Vista is nothing but a problem but I'm itchin to get my hands dirty with DX10.

Re: Vista Problems
If you run Vista & "modern games" you're fine. Its only legacy gaming that becomes problematic. I have never had a ctd in single player... So i think it might be more relating to PB & the Online service...
and i noticed the other week it happens more on the expansion packs, and even more so on CMM.. :S
ah well, I suppose its one of the Vista "features".
Btw: Ultimate Steal are now offering Vista (32/64) for £40 to people who own valid .ac.uk or educational email addresses. I'm going to try BF in x64 to see what happens...
Wish me luck!

Re: Vista Problems
Good luck Seadog. The 64 bits platform does creat a more stable ground for some applications but it will creat nightmares for others as not everything can run in a 32 bits environment.

Re: Vista Problems
Sir-Die is right, seadog.
One thing you should look at too is that your drivers are supported for the 64 bit version.
Alot of accessories do not currently/yet hdo this, and thus is one of the ways it wreaks havoc like he said.
I have the 64 bit, but didnt install it, instead being a coward and going with the 32 installation instead...

Re: Vista Problems
64 bit license didnt cost me a penny just £5 for the disc, going to give it a whirl at the weekend, desktop needs a good flattening once in a while. Vista is better than XP with the way it emulates 32bit programs though. my college seem to approve of its 64bitness for gaming, but then again bf is a few years olde.

ps. he may have some driver incompatability issues if he is having a problem. That's the big problem with 64-bit. If you have older components, alot of manufacturers do not provide the 64-bit drivers.

Re: Vista Problems
Occasionally I go 'on tour' and have to play BF1942 on my laptop which runs Vista.
The only problem I have had is that new maps start without me and I am left waiting.
I have to disconnect and reconnect then all is fine (so long as the server is not full).

Re: Vista Problems
Lucky you. Gunray and I get crashed to the desktop every few maps or so.
Naturally, it generally happens on maps we really want to play xx

Re: Vista Problems
I had some issues with bf1942 as well some things that might work:
Run the exe in compatibility mode.
Run the exe in administrator mode. (fixes some PB issues)
On thing I and some friends have noticed is that running BFVN in vista kills some of the
sound effects and background noises in the game.
A Vista BF1942 side effect is sometimes the menu's blank out.
Dual/Tri Boot The Sucker.
The machine I use for gaming is tri-booted, I share the bf1942 files amongst all three o/s's.
On the windows sides I kept a partition for shared programs between Vista and XP and adjusted
the registry on both so they would see the same directory (of course I had to do two installs and
then adjust one of the registries). In SuSE Linux I tried wine (windows emulator) to make bf42
run but that is a hassle and the EA linux execs suck but that's another forum topic somewhere else.
If you endeavor to dual boot, you will need a complete XP disk and Vista disk (not recovery disks) as XP
needs to be installed first and then Vista and then any other non windows O/S.

Re: Vista Problems
Geo,
thanks for the info.
Those 3 things have been the "consensus" of people's input on "what to try".
They still are a hit or miss (the first two are) with still enough CTD's to be too frustrating.
I refuse to do the partitioning.... it's a "principles" thingy for me (ie. on a $7000 computer, u shouldnt have to do that to get a da@% game to work!!)....
