Vista Problems

Post by seadogs »

Now then chaps & chapesses

If you were quite silly and purchased vista optionally  or you were unlucky enough to have it installed on your PC and BF1942 or any other game Crashes to desktop you may have given up. I certainly did.

But Now mr. seadogs is back.

Virtual Machines

These little gems are great for BF1942 and legacy games. Install a program called VMWare (Its far better than virtual PC, here: http://www.vmware.com/products/server/ (yes its free)).

Grab a XP disc, or download an ISO of it somwhere. Install XP onto the virtual, enable your local network adapater, install BF1942 and you are ready to be shot.

You can also use VMs to create web servers, Linux Servers, Windows Servers, Linux/Windows desktops and more... and its all free!

(You could even download the trial of Server 2008 and keep installing re-installing it every 60 days..)

I cannot for the life of me understand how people are having all these problems with Vista and gaming. I've been running Vista for close to 1 1/2 years now and have been playing BF1942 and BF 2142 and CoD 5 without ant major problems. sure i had some issues with running in comp mode or as an admin, but besides that, nada. Could it be related to people having branded machines (HP, Compaq, Dell, etc....) that are loaded with unecessary crap over Windows and such ?

mines a custom build... But it is running on a slow HDD which may have caused le problems.

i use VMs for my work so its easier for me to run bf in one.

Sorry, Sir Die... I think Winky just got so frustrated with me beating him all the time, I think he snuck a Vista bug onto my system in order to frustrate me & give up playing... it worked... lol.

Seriously, I don't know what to tell you. Mine is a Dell 720 H2C system. It had XP on it orginally, then bought Vista Ultimate & started from scratch.
I tired all the tricks that have been mentioned in the forums to no avail.
Was crashing to the desktop every 5-15 minutes when playing. It is the ONLY game I ever have had issues with since going to Vista.
No matter what I tried, it still kept crashin to desktop. Only happened AFTER goin to Vista as well.

One thing I pride myself on is my problem solving ability (that's my real job at work)... this issue took me past my breaking point...

You would think for a $7000 computer that this would be unheard of, but I guess even a price tag can't fix stupidity...

I had numerous problems with Vista
but most of these have disappeared
I still get the occasional CTD on map changes, mostly on CMM
I think the trick was to run all progs in Xp compatibility mode and with admin privilidges
including the graphics card drivers and things like PB and BFRM

the biggest issue with the comp i use most is the ATI Readon 9800 graphics card,
it is rubbish, even moreso with Vista

stick to Nvidia

I do.

I have 2, GeForce 800 Ultra's (768MB ea) with an Ageia graphix accelerator card - no difference.

FYI.

I have an ATI Wonder 650 TV Tuner Box. It crashed after a few hours watching live TV on it.
Searched for many hours on many forums on this issue - there is no fix. That ended ATI in my eyes...

ps. like I said b4, I'll try again with installing it & trying all the settings during the holidays. I have 30 days off, so I'll need SOMETHING to do... ;)

If you are running 2 GF 8800 Ultra's and an Ageia PhysX card together then that might be your prob. Nvidia bought Ageia and the PhysX chip has been included on the Nvidia cards since the Nvidia 8xxx series cards. The new Nvidia 180.48 drivers has made some changes on how you can use the PhysX when running SLI.
# Enables NVIDIA PhysX acceleration on a dedicated GeForce graphics card. Use one card for graphics and dedicate a different card for PhysX processing for game-changing physical effects. Learn more here. (Note: GPU PhysX is supported on all GeForce 8-series, 9-series and 200-series GPUs with a minimum of 256MB dedicated graphics memory. This driver package automatically installs PhysX System Software version 8.10.13).
That quote is directly from the Nvidia site driver download release highlights. I would try removing the add in Ageia PhysX card and then try.

Lone,

thanks for the post. don't think I've updated to that driver yet. will have to check it out.

However, that doesnt seem to fit the issue though. I have the same set up as before with my cards, only difference was using Win XP (and BF42 had no problems).

Also, it (NVidia) talks about leaving it on both identical card for max performance (instead of splitting between two, which I think they left out the part of 'especially if they are not identical cards').

I can always pull it (the Ageia one) out and check, but to me, it doesnt hold water (pardon the pun) of fitting to the data & problem.

Wish they would just re-relase a "new version" of BF1942 for Vista (like they do with old movies, ie digitally remastered!!! lol)

If the updated drivers and removing the PhysX card don't fix it then you might have a hardware issue between Vista and bf42. I had to reinstall Vista and haven't gotten bf42 loaded back yet but I never had a prob on Vista with bf42.

I have the following specs:
ASUS Crosshair mobo
AMD 64 x2 6400+
4GB ram
XFX 9800 GX2

I have only had probs with one game since I built this system this summer and that was with Crysis Warhead when it came out because Nvidia didn't get the drivers out till a couple of days later. So far I have been able to play what ever games I have and what has came out new on very high settings with no probs. The 8800 Ultra's in SLI mode is close to what I have with the 9800 GX2.

My 9800 has been my baby. Best card I ever owned.... I clean her,I brush her, I polish her little silver heatsinks I added to her years ago, I whisper sweet nothing in her fan every now and then, I only let her date the Omega drivers........but I do still use XP only though.
