Zouga's map making travails

Post by [JiF]zougathefist »

Things I have learned from map making
- Have a detailed plan of your terrain, otherwise you get caught up in the details and miss the bigger picture :?
- Save, Save and Save, do this as often as possible. Nothing hurts more than losing 2hrs work because you forgot to save   (except possibly a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick to the jaw)
- Take it Step-by-Step, when you have used the point selection tool to select over 850 individual points in detailed and complex trench system, DO NOT select the carving tool to lower a small hillock because ALL of your pretty little points will de-select  :(
- Start small, nothing like trying to add detail to a El Alamein size playing area when you haven't a clue what you are doing.
- Plan to spend a LOT of time in front of your monitor
- Add Bots, yeah right if you want to crash your system and have to do a full re-install of BF42 inc. patches and custom maps
- Take Pride in your Work, cos it took so much bl**dy effort to do it

But seriously, I hope to have my 'first draft' ready by the middle of next week, hopefully some of you will test it for me and I'll be seeking advice on improvements and tweaks.

till next time,

I'd like to have a peek at that! Happy to have a go at testing what your travails against the perilous bot empires have achieved!

Hey Z

Much respect to you for doing a map.
I don't think I would have the time & patience (nor the creative flair I'm a bean counter for a reason!! )
I look forward to seeing your map & would be more than happy to run round it looking for how I could get sneaky on it. :D

Are you looking at other maps for suggestions or ideas?

I have always thought it would be nice to have a map where Armor and vehicles do not respawn.
You no longer have unlimited resources and learn to value the mechanic.
Also limited number of ammo boxes, maybe located at uncap only. :D

interesting ideas corn,
I am new to all of this but I know there is a way to manipulate the respawn times and locations etc...
It is also possible to edit existing maps, I will finish the one I am doing and then play around with some others.

I like your ideas. And plz, LONGER RESPAWN TIMES - 15 SEC. Teamkills are bad - I hate the reckless ones too. Minus 2 Point - so what? TK = 30 sec.! Unintentional or intentional ~ TK = TK :( Maybe than the ppl take more looks at that what they do! I hate the b... f.... jeepkills if the drive in the front of the tank to take him out (not the tiger, but the sherman and the IV. b...s...! I mean the intentional car crashs. Sometimes this way is the last way to make a frag for somebody - i know that - but this is realy not the way to learn the game guys! :( The punishment for this behavior would have to be higher.

Good luck to you with this project!
Alfred

So I tested my map yesterday, and the trenches are about 12ft (3m) deep, the walls are too high to see over and you die if you jump into them....
back to the drawing board methinks

Looking at about 1 week for the Beta release
stay tuned sports fans

Trenches are no fun unless there is the possibility of drowning in a light shower.

I was just about to propose to Zouga to fill them with water.

englishman, frenchman and German find a Genie in a bottle,
He gives them one wish each that will be of benefit to their country,
The frenchman pipes up straight away, "I would like a great beeg wall, all de way arond ze glorious nation of France, to keep all of ze foreigners out!"
"Done" says the genie
The German says "I voud like Deutschland to regain its status as a vorld leader in manufacturing and beer production"
"No problemo" says the (surfer type dude?) genie
Then the genie turns to the englishman; "what would you like?"
"Tell me more about the frenchy's wall"
"well" says the genie, "its 50ft thick at the base, 15ft at the top and over 80ft high all the way around the country"
"Great" says the Englishman; "Fill it with Water"

Zouga! Why am I laughing instead of being horrified??
I suppose having English blood and a large collection of Monty Python helps

But water filled trenches reminded me of a pic I've had on my pc for some time now:

The scary thing about the pic is that they (Mini-Lini) are not wearing masks! :D
