Crossfire

Post by [JiF][AARP]Tissueman »

Sometimes something happens that makes a mundane trip more interesting. Because I travel so much on business, I have National Car Rental Emerald Aisle Executive status. It sounds impressive, but it just means you spend too much of your life on airplanes, in rental cars and hotels. Tuesday I flew from Cincinnati to Atlanta. I used to fly the leg down to Albany, GA, but service is so unreliable that I now drive 3 hours to get here. I go the 'back' way down I85 to I185. It is a very pleasant drive with very little traffic as opposed to I75.

The National bus pulled up and there were literally no cars in the National lot. Normally I hop off the bus and have my choice of a dozen or so cars. I always carefully choose an Gray, Silver or White Impala or Stratus. The National representative told us to 'form a line'. I was second in line. She told the first person to take a Silver Impala that just pulled up. She looked at me and asked if I was by myself. "Yep!" "Would you like to take that Crossfire?" "Sure!" It's a black convertible. So I've been driving my little Crossfire the last couple of days. I'll never put the top down as I don't really like convertibles, but it is nice to have one.

I guess it says something about me though when the main reason I like it is that I can tell my car-loving fanatical colleagues who all drive BMW's that I'm driving a Crossfire Convertible. Most of them get off the rental car bus and run to get the fancier cars. It irks them because they know that I never even heard of a Crossfire until Tuesday. It's a case of pearls before swine. I suppose I should feel bad about that. :D Now I just need to get a camera so I can get a photo of me in my Crossfire to send them. In real life I drive a Camry. We have a two: 1993 and 2002. We tend to keep cars until they fall apart.

It's a long way in and out of it. I'm not sure I could handle it in 10 years. That's the nice thing about the Camry. My 81 year old dad can get in and out of it very easily. I don't think he'd enjoy getting into the Crossfire.

Nice car, Kelly, but it's not a Camry

And its not a Saturn.
I have been looking at the Scion XB as a commuting car. Its designed for the younger gen, but its real easy to get in and out of for a pretty small car. It has an amazing amount of room and you sit upright. Well its kinda ugly too, but ugly enough so I like it. I test drove one with 4 adults and it was okay. Has absolutely no power, but considering the engine size its not bad.
Older people have been buying it. There was actually a write up in the AARP magizine for it. Probably not a car for long runs. Its a little stiff of a ride.
I will probably not get one, but I like to look around once in a while anyway :)

Tissue please tell me you've actually gone fast enough to have the spoiler rise. I think it comes out around 60mph.

I considered buying a crossfire but it's a little too small. Ended up getting a Mazda RX-8. Anytime any of these muscle car lovers want to visit me on the racetrack I promise I'll be nice enough to wave at them as I lap 'em. But those cars are fun to drive in a straight line.

I had it up to 75-80 for a while, but didn't look for the spoiler. I'll have to see if I notice it on the way back to Atlanta tomorrow. "Sorry, Officer. I was trying to watch the spoiler deploy when I ran off the road".
