interesting server notes

Post by [JiF]chaser »

It is interesting to note server performance on our tf2 server again when it was full with 24 players... when it was first setup and and full several months ago after a tf2 update, loads were a tad higher than they were this time.. perhaps due to srcds optimizations..

below are the number of players via game-monitor.com that indicate we were full from roughly around 7pm to after midnight 8)

during that time cpu usage was never maxed and was only a few times higher than 50%, since the server is a dual core it could easily handle 150% which means upgrading to 32 players would not be an issue, and it also corresponds to player comments about zero lag etc..
Image

also interesting is that at peak usage the max outbound bandwidth was only around 2mbit/sec and inbound ~ 600k... also upgrading tf2 via the valve servers maxed out ~ 5mbit/sec.. the server is on a 100mbit port so valve could be throttling or since the setup checks/upgrades/installs files individually there might not be enough time to reach peak.. or of course everyone could have been upgrading at the same time

No all we have to do is try to keep it that way (populated).
I'm working on solving the gas crisis.

LOL bf1942 is so old it won't even play on my 64bit vista machines without crashing on map changes... granted bf played its role in JiF.. I can still remember the day when thos and I went out to by the cd's the day it came out, and then we all started slowly migrating away from tfc to bf1942. those were fun times.. almost as fun as the tfc days.. it will be interesting to see if ea releases a new wwII game as good as the original bf1942 instead of the frequent bloatware releases, or if their free battlefield heroes download is any good... i certainly hope so.

So what your saying then is, it's not worth upgrading to Vista, cause I'll lose the use of BF1942?
I'm a man, but I can change, if I have to, I guess.

That's about it chap.
A number of our members experience exactly that problem. Crashes during map changes just can't be fun! I've heard the chaps on the other end of team speak when it happens. :(
Having said that some seem to have worked around the problem so it could be worth one of our more experienced Vista users that do not get any problems putting a sticky in the Tech section to reveal their secrets for others to use as a reference point.
