I was watching a homemade BF42 gameplay video on YouTube recently, and noticed that while playing as infantry, the player was leading his shots (with assualt rifle) by at least 2 or 3 centimeters in front of the direction that his targets were moving, and was getting his kills in very quickly.
I've always tried to lead my shots to compensate for lag etc, but never by that distance! At the very most I lead my shots by maybe 1 cm in front of the target. Am I under-compensating, would I get more accuracy by extending the distance?
I'm curious to know by just how far other players lead their shots?
I realize there are different factors to take into consideration for every player, such as weapon type, lag and distance, although distance would be pretty consistent, as one only tends to fire at a target that is in range, but I was wondering if there'd be some sort of common consensus about lead distance, as I really need to start developing a feel for it, without over/undercompensating the whole time and being totally off-track.

If the target is heading straight at you, no need to lead him, just start a little below the head so the recoil raises the shots into the head area.
When I am the Engineer, I try to make every shot count because if you miss, you end up toast so I tend to lead more and make sure the shot is lined up good prior to pulling the trigger.
As for how much distance to lead, I am not too sure myself, I try to figure out a good range and distance each time I sign on.
It works as long as the target is cooperative and doesn't constantly change directions on you (try leading shots on [JiF]WinkyDeathKill sometime, there is some sort of 6th sense bullet avoidance at play there I swear).mbm wrote: I guess it's a zen rifleman thang. 2 - 3 cm is excessive unless they are in a fast moving vehicle at long range - and then generally its not worth bothering.
I find that about 0.5 cm - 1 cm is enough at extremes of infantry movement / lag / angle within the sort of range I would bother trying to hit someone at an angle.
Better than leading I find that short bursts ( 2/3 shots then a quick pause) is good. If I had better discipline I would also do this at short range. This technique would improve your accuracy more than leading. Tip - try this against a wall to see the spread pattern. It's amazing the grouping you can get with a pause in between 2/3 shots.
Or if they are too good then use phsycology. Hide then approach the enemy in order to get behind them - if seen alter your percieved approach out of sight or take a different path in view of them and then double back out of sight. A good percentage of the time you will end up behind the enemy and then you don't need to lead - just give them a hUTCHIE surprise.

Yes, the best lead would be around that, or i take it as a person length, so putting an imaginary person ahead of your target. it works very well for me.
