Ethernet Problems

Post by [JiF]LtWaterboy »

Okay,

First - remember, I'm a layman (for the most part!) with computer parts.

Here's the situation if anyone has any ideas:

Just got back to Pittsburgh and now on Comcast as my ISP.

I installed the software, hooked up the LAN/ethernet cable, and got everything working at first.
As part of the procedure, I had to first deactivate all my Firewall/spyware/etc stuff (I use McAfee only).

Once everything was running well, I then reset all my McAfee settings and then shutdown.

I then restarted my computer, and tried opening up IE again, but couldnt connect back to the internet.

I talked to Comcast and they tried to help - to no avail. he thought my ethernet card went out on me, especially
because there was nothing showing up in my device manager under network controllers.
I just found out this morn (when I opened my case up!) that I dont HAVE a card - my ethernet is an integrated port only.

When I was having the problem, the little orange/yellow light was on flashing (like it was receiving a signal), but still kept getting
the PAGE CANT BE DISPLAYED message when IE opened up.

I'm running off of a USB connection, instead, right now that works with no problems. However, I cant use my Netgear Firewall/Router
as a result (since it only has LAN jacks and no USB).

Any of you experts have any thoughts on this before I go do something stupid and run out and BUY and actual 10/100MB ethernet card??

much appreciated... :)

I'm not sure what you are looking for but ... it sounds as if you may have turned off your LAN adapter in the BIOS ("nothing showing up in my device manager under network controllers".

Not sure about that, Badger... Does a USB NIC show up under network controllers or under USB devices?

Reboot and go into the BIOS and check to see if the LAN card is activated. If it is and it's still not working, head over to best buy and shell out the 10 bucks for a new ethernet card. Install, disable the onboard lan controller in the bios, and you should be good to go.
