Less Spam?

Post by [JiF]Mike »

Anyone else notice significantly less spam coming in over the past few days? Wonder if it had anything to do with that guy arrested over in Japan for spamming...hard to believe one arrest would do it though.

I had a 99% reduction in spam when I changed my ISP to Network Solutions.
I used to get at least 20 a day, now I get 2 a week.

Yes yes we all have filters and whatnot whether they be from the ISP or something else. The wanna-be meat jokes were expected...:) I to have filters, and rarely get any spam in my inbox. I do however keep an eye on the spam I get to have an idea of what other people might be getting to help them out when they have questions about emails they may be getting. However the spam detected by the various filters I use has dropped from 30 a day to 4...which is very odd imo, but very welcome!

Our January Stats
45302 (2%) Good Email
2194336 (98%) SPAM

Probably 10% of the good 2% was SPAM that made it through :(

A spam Story:

I received a spam email from a marketing firm in New Jersey that wanted to link to my site for their clients and vis versa. This came through my website which has a form you have to fill out as webmail. It clearly says, "I am no longer working and not taking on any new work", right above the email interface. So in that light, I sent back a link to the video of the infamous Monty Python, "spam", episode. No comments, just the link. Harmless enough I thought...

I got an irate email back, half apologetic and half insulting, very weird and unprofessional. I ignored it and went out for the evening. Over the span of 3-4 hours 3 more emails ranting on about nonsense and one included a link to a gay pornographic site with some smarmy remarks about how, "I would like it". I got in later that night and read all the emails and clicked on the porn link. It took me all of 5 second to realize what an idiot I was dealing with. I went to the original email clicked on the website and saw I was dealing with a girl of maybe 22-25 who was running this "internet marketing" company. She had a referral page of all the sites she wanted to link to my site. I copied and pasted all the emails of her clients and forwarded the entire set of emails she sent to me and wrote, "Why is the person bothering me on your behalf?"

I never heard back from her...

Also, I recently had one of my email addresses hijacked. Essentially they had figured out my password and were using my account to send out spam through Comcast. The only reason I even knew is that all the rejected spam was bouncing back to me. About 3-4000 bounced back to me. It was horrific porn and rolex watch style spam. Some people who actually received them started replying to me with, "who the F are you?" and such. After a day of that, I called Comcast and changed my password.
