Ping

Post by [JiF][AARP]Tissueman »

Strange problem: Last night I fired up ASE and my ping to the Wolf server was ~200. Normal is ~55. I checked the JiF BF42 server and got the normal ~55. So I logged onto the Wolf server and my ping was in the 20's. This is half what it normally is. I jumped back to ASE and it stll showed 200 plus. It ran like that for a while (in the 20's) then I started getting spikes to 200. They didn't last very long - a second or two at most. Later in the evening I began to get real choppy. I've had that happen before when Norton AV begins a scan, but I didn't see anything running. I'm not sure what it was, but it soon stopped and my ping was permanently up at 200. Then over the next 30 mins or so it slowly dropped to 180, 160, 150 and was at 130 when I quit. I quit playing and a little while later ASE showed a ping in the 60's.

The other thing happening was that everytime the map changed I got a "no BF disk in drive" message. I'd click retry or cancel or continue and get the message a second time. Then no matter what I clicked, after the second time the game would load as normal.

I've been wondering if a component in my PC is about to fail. I've noticed a higher pitched whine than normal. Do the above symptoms give me any clue? Can I do a complete copy of my current hard drive to another hard drive in case this happens? Advice appreciated.

If you have Norton Ghost you can copy the drive to another.
If not, but you have a drive identical or larger to the original you can use G4U (Ghost For Unix).
