Mine don't bother my ears really at all.
I did use USB for a while but seemed to keep having issues with everything trying to decide which device to use. Finally just used my sound card. Stll had some issues having to unplug and plug the mic back in to get recognized. Then I started using the front ports (set to analog) and I have not had an issue since. Other than not remembering to turn the mic on

I haven't had any problems with the USB- and it's tons easier than
crawling behind my computer to plug things in everytime I want
to change the arrangement.
Grimp's computer is just defective

The ICEMAT headphones w/USB sound card is very simple. It comes with software to fix the issue with your PC trying to figure out what to do. I have my USB cable laying under my monitor and all I have to do is plug it into the USB sound card and the software turns off my speakers and turns on the headphones at the sametime. The USB soundcard will work with any headphones because you can buy it seperate, I have tried several different headphones with the USB soundcard and it worked perfect everytime.

I guess I never really switch it out that often- I do notice
when I do that it takes a minute for the comp to recognize
that the headset is in.
Hasn't been enough of an issue to warrent me actually
doing something about it though.
