BF1942 Basics
Any golfers out there? Cuz to me, playing BF1942 is a lot like golf. Some days you go out and shoot in the low 90s. Other days, you suck so bad you stop keeping score. But the other thing is how important it is to remember the basics. When you're chipping, you walk up to the ball thinking, "keep your head down," set up the shot up thinking, "keep your head down," and then when you swing you lift your head up and the ball scubs off the other side of the green.
To me, the 3 most important basics in BF1942 are:
1) Keep moving. All the time!!!!!! Like the chip shot above, can't tell you how many times I forget to do this until it's too late. All I'm doing is giving Waterboy an easy target.
2) Bail out! I die way too many times in a plane or tank because I think I can get in one more shot as my plane/tank is getting shot up.
3) Spawn smart. Chalk it up to stubborness, but I will often keep respawning at a site under fire in the hope of exacting revenge. More often than not, I'm dead within 2 seconds.
The other thing I've noted is that if you want really high scores, learn to fly a plane. On some maps it's like shooting fish in a barrel. Needless to say, I can't fly worth a damn.
On the other hand, I'd have to say my scores have improved since I've gone Medic, as the gun is easier to handle and the self-healing is literally a life-saver.

Re: BF1942 Basics
Ya, I am a stubborn spawner too. Just hoping to spawn right at the back of the bad tank with a bazooka and I don't like to give up a flag It's not gonna happen much, but I gotta try.
I just have to remember to laugh at myself when it happens over and over and over.
Abandoning a tank wounded our not is always a gamble. Sometime you get the nasty engy trying to blow you up sometimes he gets your tank and you are staring down the barrel
Most times I should probably just die with the tank, but I can't help myself.

Re: BF1942 Basics
Twice yesterday I was killed by a bazookateer who jumped out of his burning tank just before I did, and delivered the coup de grace.
The worst thing is when you abandon your tank just a tad bit too early, and the enemy jumps into it and kills you. Like watching that chip shot sail across the green and into a trap.

Yeah but if you keep on moving and, this is important, keep far enough away from the tank you're fighting then the zooker won't be able to hit you. Plus you're on him anyway so a few shots with your machine gun usually happen faster than he can sight you.[JiF]Uncle Stinky wrote:Twice yesterday I was killed by a bazookateer who jumped out of his burning tank just before I did, and delivered the coup de grace.

BTW - Plane Flying = Lots of Points = Misnomer. The best way to get points is to defend two points close together with a fast tank (Sherman/Panzer) or as a medic. On El Al that would be the East and North points. Gazala you can defend either the sw and se point or the ne and se point. Gazala is a little easier because it has repair pads but you need to be decent in the machine gun to keep from getting bombed. I also get silly scores when I go medic and defend/attack the two airfield caps on Raid of Aghelia or either the 4 bottom caps of Santo Croce or the three top ones.
Everyone seems to think that kills are what gets you points. The reality is that when you defend a flag that has turned gray you typically get a kill out of it and then the flag turns back to your side. That means at least 3 points. If it's a heavily trafficked area then you will be constantly running from point to point. It's also better than trying to attack distant places or camping. Camping rarely nets you a lot of points and while it has some strategic benefits that's only the case if the other team -has- to spawn there. If they can spawn somewhere else then they will.
Flyers spend too much time waiting for planes or getting altitude. And they're normally dumb. They think that attacking the other teams spawn points will net them the most points but the reality is that most spawn points have an AA gun around that knocks them out quick and then, after they've died, they realize that their spawnpoints are all gone and there's a dumb flyer camping their point. They have to fight that camper and then get into the air and then get altitude. There's a few rare flyers who can stay alive for a long time and can pinpoint bomb. Those guys -might- be good enough to beat out a good combined player for a medal but even then they usually just have impressive K:D - not enough scoring to get the gold.
It's just not at all efficient. There's a time and a place to fly but if your goal is to get the highest scores or to get in the medal brackets then it's the wrong approach.

Re: BF1942 Basics
Although I like to point out when I get high scores I am happiest when my team wins.
I am not a good enough player by myself and can have many a round with a horrible score, but I know in a lot of cases even with a low score I contributed to the win. Sometimes just tying up some of the enemy by being persistent at a flag will help a lot. In most of cases a strong offense is needed to keep the other team out of your spawn.
I also tend toward the attacking teams side on CQ maps which will almost always give you a horrible KD ratio.

Ha! Good point. It can be EXTREMELY satsifying to keep a flag grey and see the other guy give up in frustration and go somewhere else.

Re: BF1942 Basics
I've found that getting a high score by defending a set of flags usually helps your team the most. That's one of the reasons I don't mind playing on the short-stacked team in a lopsided game. If I'm able to maintain two points - even on a 7 point map - it's usually enough to keep my team in it.[JiF][AARP]Grimp wrote:Although I like to point out when I get high scores I am happiest when my team wins.

It's pretty rare that the team I'm on loses. The other night we lost on Raid but I kept the two airport points in play the entire map. I just never left them except once briefly when the other team capped them both and killed me - but I flew back and grabbed one pretty quick. However the other team was doing a great job keeping the 3 middle points capped. It was just a well played game by both sides.
Back when I wasn't that good of a player I would go the 'Mentat' strategy and be an engy set up to defend a single point. I'd leave a tank out for bait with Expacs around it. I'd have mines strategically placed to push guys towards my expacs or to keep them just out of the flag capped range. I usually would end up with a pretty decent score and because that cap was almost always defended (especially if I had some good air cover) my team usually did well.

Sly sums it up well in his last couple postings here... only thing that I question is:[JiF]Sly Gambit wrote:I've found that getting a high score by defending a set of flags usually helps your team the most. ps. and yes, I used to shoot sporadically in the high 70's (78 & 79 every blue moon).
unfortunately, when you have to work for a livin and become cheap, scores/HDCP's go up & then so does the # of fishin trips instead!!!

My low 90s includes one mulligan per 9 holes, and occasional use of the "toe wedge" to improve a lie.

Re: BF1942 Basics
the keep moving thing only applies when in close to mid-range combat, if your enemy is about the size of your crosshair or smaller i find its best to move-stop-kneel-shoot-move (if you aren't and engineer replace shoot with fire small burst.) and always aim for the head. in close range combat i have no strategy other than the tried and true dogma of Spray'n'Pray
That's right, these posts are the result of the dedicated work of me and a room full of monkeys working diligently on our typewriters.
