PCIe 1.0 slot with a PCIe 2.0 vid card

Post by [JiF]Sly Gambit »

Just bought a BFG 8800 GTS 512mb (G92)(OC). It's PCIe 2.0. My mobo's a couple years old (ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe) and while I know it's x16 it can't be PCIe 2.0. Anyone know what kind of performance hit I take by using this card in a PCIe 1.0 slot?

Just curious where I should rank my mobo on my 'Upgrade this' list. If there isn't much of an advantage gained with PCIe 2.0 then I won't have to change my motherboard until I decide to build a whole new rig. ETA for that is never if I can help it. :)

PS. If anyone's interested there's a good sale on that card here:

http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=762642

Link is to NewEgg but they've got a promo deal that lops off $15 so it's around $250 before the $30 MIR.

AFAIK, with the possible exception of the 9000 series, none of the current cards are taking full advantage of PCI 2.0 archetecture, however, you shouldn't just take my word for it, as i am by no means an expert.
That's right, these posts are the result of the dedicated work of me and a room full of monkeys working diligently on our typewriters.

The g92 in the 8800 GTS is the same chip that will be in the 9800 so it's gonna be able to use it. However from researching it I think it won't have any real impact unless I go SLI - which I won't barring a small lotto winning (a big one and I'll be buying premade rigs :D).
