Recording Sound...

Hello,

Seeing if there is a way on the cheapO side to record to mp3 or way, all the audio that would normally come out of the headphone jack.
Would putting a cable from the headphone jack and loop it into the Audio IN port??

I just want to be able to record and playback what sounds that come out of the headphone jack.

You can loop the out speaker or headphone into a line in or mic with a cable. Free recorder http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ better than windows sound recorder.

I used that to burn 30 CD's for my mom from all her old cassettes.

Quality was as good as it could get.

One thing to add - there's actually an add-on file to Audacity that you have to download as well (LAME mp3 decoder)

It's what allows you to convert from the the .wav to .mp3 format easily.

It's actually on the same link that Grimp sent you as well. Here's the location for it there (not exactly easy to find!)

You don't need the cable that was mentioned earlier. Go into the Play Control/Volume/Mixer thing and select "options" and then "properties". Under properties select the recording button, and check the box marked "What U Hear".

Is that specific to a particular sound card. My work PC does not seem to have that option. I will check my home one.
Or I am looking in the wrong place?

Grimp: The way pissboy described should definitely work to activate the sum slider, if your sound hardware uses the standard Windows mixer application - though on my system it's not named "what u hear", but "Stereo Mix".

However, whether a recording input channel is activated in the standard Windows mixer or not, doesn't seem to matter, if you use Audacity: The input dropdown box shows all available input channels, anyway.
