Torpedo Bombers
Can you actually launch torpedos into the sides of ships with planes such as TBF Avenger in Midway, or do you simply drop them on ships as with normal bombs?1

Re: Torpedo Bombers
If you come in low and NOT TO FAST, you can launch the torpedo to the side of the ship, just like the PT boats do in Invasion of the Philippines. From too high or in too fast, the torpedo goes under the ship.

Re: Torpedo Bombers
Thanks, I'll have to try that out.
Last night on Midway, I dropped a torpedo right in the middle of the non-carrier Japanese ship, and as I made my turn for another run, noticed it was sinking. Pretty amazing for Pilot Stinky. In all my BF1942 flying minutes, I've killed myself way more times than the enemy.

I have noticed it works very well when you are close to the water and release just before you pull up.
I like the US torpedo plane, the landing gear raises up giving you a little more room.
I have actually caught the water on my wheels of the Jap plane and caused me to crash.

Re: Torpedo Bombers
I watched a bot drop a torpedo from a jap plane in Midway the other day. It seemed to drop like a stone no running in with the plane. I must point out it was bombing the airfield flag position, but it was interesting to watch how it flew once released. i guess if dropped in to water it behaves differently!!

Nah, the bot will behave the same wether you drop it in the water or on the ground

Re: Torpedo Bombers
FWIW you always want to be level over the water when you drop it. However the height you want to be should vary depending on the ship you're targeting. I also think the torpedo can be a little stronger than one torpedo from the torp boats. I'm sure the damage scaling is still somewhere on the Internet. People don't delete things.
IIRC the lower you are the higher up the torp will be. IE if you're just skimming the water the torp will be almost on the top of the water. If you are a few more feet above the water when you drop it the torpedo will be a few more feet down under the water.
This means that for different ships you'll want to be at a different height. I believe the Battleship and Carrier have about the same depth so you can drop from a decent height (still skimming but not so you're losing health from waves ). The cruiser and destroyers are a little higher up so you have to skim closer. The Sub, when it's surfaced, is actually the hardest to hit of the bigger ships and I'm not sure they'll skim high enough to take out landing craft.
And IIRC you actually do more damage the closer to the bottom of the hull you get so a torp on a battleship is more powerful if you let it go from a decent height than it is if you're skimming.
We played Midway conquest for a while before a 3FL match a few years ago and experimented on the depths. I think I was doing it with WB because Bort wasn't around and we were the only two dumb enough to try to fly and there aren't enough tanks to go around on Midway. I think we got schooled.

Come on. You have to be kidding. If a bot dropped a torpedo I'm sure it successfully had the torpedo hit whoever it was aiming at in the head from 10000 feet above the air. Bots don't miss. Remember this when they complete their programming with their years of training on BF1942 for their real invasion. vb .Lt Gav wrote:I watched a bot drop a torpedo from a jap plane in Midway the other day.

Yeah it's funny, but bots in tanks couldn't hit the broad side of a barn door with a spade, but stick em in a plane & they're deadly accurate with the bombs. I reckon on Battle of Britain they use Special Forces to lase them in if you're sat in the AA guns.[JiF]Sly Gambit wrote:Come on. You have to be kidding. Yep, slow and low seems to be the trick. Then try to gain speed and fly sideways through the rigging. Its fun to take them out with properly deployed torps, but if the ships AA is actually being used its very hard to do. You make a great target. Angles from the bow or stern are best when AA is being used, but the ship is harder to hit. Swimming sucks Hopefully you are close to the enemy ship or another 2 seater is nearby to pick you up when you go down.

Re: Torpedo Bombers
Nothing worse than sitting in your AA on BoB and hearing that incoming bomb. You know it's going to hit you but if you jump out of your AA that bomber is gonna make all 8 of their bombs hit the factory on it's next run.Lt Gav wrote:Yeah it's funny, but bots in tanks couldn't hit the broad side of a barn door with a spade, but stick em in a plane & they're deadly accurate with the bombs. BoB with bots is a funny map to play.

Re: Torpedo Bombers
Next time you play BoB and I'm on the Axis side, look for me dancing on top of the factory roof. I love going up there and serving as a target beacon for the Heinkels. And taking out the odd, and surprised, AA gunner from time to time.
I used to hate BoB but now it's one of my favorites, mainlyb ecause it is so different.

Re: Torpedo Bombers
Interesting info. on torpedoes. Trying to use them as bombs just wasn't as appealing as their intended purpose. Great advice.
Well Stinky if you're on the roof I can feel safe about climbing into the hangar Jubba and making mincemeat out of the departing planes. Is that wrong?
