Game Myth-Busters: Lag of the Wireless Mouse

Post by Lonewolf-McQuade »

Do a quick web search on Google or Yahoo using 'wireless mouse slow gaming' and you will find yourself smack in the middle of an urban legends argument about wireless keyboards/mice and gaming. Some say wireless devices tend to lag and aren't ideal for gaming in a FPS. Others say just the opposite. Depending on your view of the issue you can find anecdotal blogs and product reviews to support each theory. But where is the the science? I conducted my own experiment by using a brand new Microsoft intellipoint Lasermouse 6000 since Christmas. The results? I sensed that it was slower than my old hardwired intellipoint. I have read several reviews that claim it does not detect minute movement as well as some others too. I experienced more situations of 'shoot-outs' where I had the upper-hand in positioning, but the firing was less accurate and perhaps not initiated quick enough to win out. This of course could be human error as well. So what can I tell you, then, to measure your wireless product decisions with? I searched near and far and have only been able to identify a few tips of interest:

1- Bluetooth mice and keyboards have the capability to be faster so long as the blue tooth functionality is integrated within the PC. (That means no USB based bluetooth adapters!)
2- On the USB side you will want to know how many USB reports per second are initiated by the device.
3- You will want a high DPI resolution on a laser device to detect minute movements.
4- 2.0 or better ghz freq. is best for wireless communication and limits interference.

In the end it's really up to the user to sort it out. I feel like my performance is slower and less accurate so I'm looking to get something like this or go back to hardwired: http://www.everythingusb.com/logitech_g ... mouse.html

Time to use that gift card!!! Wait it retails at $100?!?

I have used wireless mice for several years now for everyday use and for gaming. I currently use the G7 for gaming and I love it and will never go back to a wired mouse. I can tell you this much as far as I'm concerned the G7 is worth the $100. The Logitech site has it in black carbon fiber that looks wicked and I'm going to get it in the next month or so as my current one is silver and black.

I have done testing like you did but only with Logitech as I wont buy any other brand and to me the G7 seems more accurate then a wired mouse since you set the DPI settings all the way up to 2000. I have tried some of the Razor mice and to me they don't seem as responsive or accurate as the G7 even though everyone claims them to be the best.

Just my 2 cents on it.

I also have a G-7 mouse and will never go back to wired.
My biggest problem is that my response time has diminished with age, and not the mouse. :(

That can be, uh.... uh.... a real uh...... problem. I've never tried a wireless mouse. I don't like the idea of having to use batteries. Perhaps if they self generated power when you move them.

LMAO, Tiss... :)

FYI... there are those ones that have a recharge stand and permanent battery... just gave my nephew my old MX1000.

Does that one count??

I bought my kid a MX700 Logitech mouse,corded laser.
I am going to compare gameplay with my G7 cordless. 8)

Results will be posted in a few weeks or when one of these persuades me sooner. :)

There will be a big difference between the 2 as I have the MX700 and MX1000 and my G7 out performs both hands down. The MX700 is an optical mouse which isn't as accurate as the G7 since its a laser mouse.

I'll check it out.
I may have purchased the wrong one.
Comparing the 2, with the cordless being the only difference is what i was aiming for.

The revolution is a wicked mouse for the home or office but isn't that great for gaming. Here is the review I done on the revolution.

I wont use any other mouse for my day to day work as the revolution is just so nice when it comes to like office work and such.

The corded mouse is actually a MX 400 laser.
I got it wrong on my earlier post. :(

I should have bought a G-9.
