New Server for work

Post by [JiF]Mike »

I was asked to build a server for work. I just got the case ... and omg drool..I want one for home!! http://www.intel.com/design/servers/cha ... /index.htm

It has dual 800W redundant hotswap power supplies, and a 6 drive SAS hot swap cage. This case alone cost almost $1000....I can't wait to start putting all the fun stuff in it. Gonna let it rest over night to warm up though :(. I could get used to building $13,000 servers. lol

All the parts finally arrived today (newegg.com screwed up big time) so I finally got to turn this bad boy on. :) Damn thing is literally louder than a vacuum cleaner.

heh..not yet...but it has enough fans in it where it actually required me to remove the fans from the cpu heat sinks. I was pretty nervous but that's what it required. Check out the UPS for this thing...might be a little overkill but it's awesome. :) Behind it is an HP4150N printer that looks small now lol.

Have fun with the new toy Mike.

Make sure not to lift that sucker off the table all by your lonesome! You'll be speed dialing chiropractors in no time.

I'm guessing that's Raid 5 using all 6 drives?

The UPS is 150 lbs and the (heh) UPS delivery guy wasn't too happy. I can actually move it in 3 parts that breaks the weight down quite a bit, but that takes too much time and I've only moved it twice now, I don't plan on moving it again for a while. It was quite a shock when it was delivered, the picture of it was a generic APC UPS and I didn't look at the physical description when I ordered it. Here's the specs of the server, I still drool and think about throwing a nice graphic card in it and playing some games. lol

Intel Server Chasis SC5400LXI
Intel Xeon E5345 Clovertown 2.33GHz Socket 771 80W Quad-Core X 2
Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 FB-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) ECC Fully Buffered Dual Channel X 2
Fujitsu MAX3036RC 36.7GB 15,000 RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Hard Drive X 2
Fujitsu MAX3073RC 73GB 15,000 RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Hard Drive X 4
Intel S5000PSLSATA Dual 771 Intel 5000P SSI EEB 3.6 (Extended ATX) Server Motherboard
Intel SRCSAS18E PCI Express SATA / SAS Controller Card RAID 0/1/5/10/50
Quantum BHBAM-EY Black 320GB Internal SATA Interface DLT-V4 Tape Drive
APC SUM1500RMXL2U 1440 VA 1425 Watts Smart-UPS XL Modular

The hard drives are split into 2 drives. The OS drive is 36GB RAID 1, and the data drive is 136GB RAID 10. All drives are hot swappable and spares are on hand. :) I also bought Windows Server 2003 with 20 CAL's, MS SQL Server with 20 CAL's and backup software with the agent for SQL. The hardware was expensive, but the software really shot the price up!

Oh, I also quieted the fans. Found out that when you put an Intel server board into an Intel case there in a BIOS utility that needs to be run that tells the motherboard how to control the fans properly and adjust for heat. Then it took me a while to find the utility on their site (included with BIOS updates if your ever looking for it) and as soon as I rebooted the fans started spinning down. They were spinning so fast it took a good 20 seconds for them to spin down and level out. It's so much nicer now.
