drywall question

I changed out a door and in doing so had to reframe it by adding a 2x4 along one side and now have a 1.75" x 80 or so inch strip of drywall to meet up where the old frame's drywall ended. Much of it will be covered by the trim, but I'm not sure how well it will hold up if I put in a 1.75" strip of drywall and feather it out using some mesh and compound. I could cut out a larger piece, sliding in some 2 x 4's and use a larger piece. A bit more work, but not sure it's really needed. Think that small strip will hold up?

If it's a door that'll be opened and closed very often, the joint will eventually crack and show. The good wat to do it, albeit is more work, is to cut your drywall at the next adjacent stud (right in the middle) so you can screw a new piece that is 16'' (or whatever you measure is) wide and screw the drywall that's left from you cut to the same stud. That way, you have a repair that is as solid as the original and a joint that'll never show.

sir die-a-lots recommndation is the best way to handle it.
My way, the easy/lazy way would be to rely on the door trim to cover most of it and then mud and tape it real good were ever it was exposed.

I did put in a pocket door so it shouldn't be slammed shut all that often (went from a swinging door to a pocket door). It won't be hard to cut back to the next stud though.

With a pocket door you wont have to cut back like that. I put a pocket door in and had a 2" piece of dry wall to put in and it has been for close 10 years now. I use the self adhesive type of tape and then after I feathered it all out you could never tell I had put it in.

Yeah Lonewolf's right. Since it's a pocket door, there won't be much stress on the wall so the easy, less messy way will do aplenty.

I hate that self adheisive mesh tape. I have always used the paper tape for drywall joints. It's thinner than the mesh tape and you don't get that zipper look from the mesh in your mud.
Either way, if you tape it well, you shouldn't have any problems with it.
Why didn't you get a door 2" bigger?

Not yet. I did try a bigger door but it was a hair too big to fit into the pocket.
