Geek Gift Guide 2007

Post by [JiF]Beej1024 »

So what are all of us looking for under our trees this year?

I want a portable device, like one of those WiFi network locators, but I also want it to do the WEP cracking on the fly for me too. We all know how broken WEP is, someone in the open source community must have made a small device for this by now! [NSA NOTE] I do not wish to do anything illegal with this, I just think it is super cool [/NSA NOTE]

Haven't seen anything like that (and I'm pretty sure you could never find it unless it's on a police raid ;)) but maybe this will satisfy your craving for something a little different:

Oh and this can probably be manipulated via linux to crack wifi:

http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/80ce/

The Linux software download for it says this:

http://www.kismetwireless.net/spectools/
Spectrum-Tools is a set of utilities for using the Wi-Spy USB spectrum analyzer hardware from Metageek LLC. They include userspace drivers for the hardware (implemented via libusb), a graphing UI built on GTK/Cairo, network servers for remote devices, and simple utilities for developing additional tools.
I'm pretty sure if you ask around the darker forums on the Internet you'll find some tools that can work on this... But I doubt you want to shell out $200 w/o knowing for sure. There are some forums there with a list of questions/suggestions where you could probably ask if there's a way to test for WEP encryption problems. :)

Take Ziggy with you. He is not all that big so he won't take up much space and gets around okay still :D
