Vid Card Question
My current PC is about 4 years old. I'm trying to squeeze a little more time out of it. I have the minimum required to run Crysis except for my vid card. My current rig Dell XPS Gen5:
3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 (minimum is the 6800 GT)
2 GB RAM
The case is black with a pretty blue light on the front.
I've been considering getting the GeForce 8800 GT. Do I have to worry about this fitting/working?

Re: Vid Card Question
The XPS is a full size case correct? The 8800 is a long card and and if you have a PCI-E slot with enuf room behind it then it will work. You might be able to find the specs on the size and then you can make sure you have enuf room. As far as I know the length is the only real question as the 8800GT is a single slot card so there wont be any issues there.

Re: Vid Card Question
It's a pretty good sized case. I was surprised at how big it was when I got it. I don't think room will be an issue, but I'll open it up before I order one. I'm not in a rush to get it.

Re: Vid Card Question
If the case is really big, maybe you can rent the room in the back to the gnomes that'll be running in the threadmill to run the colling fans.

Tiss,
just like in my situation,
power supply, then motherboard are probably the order in which you would be limited.
I think the case is not an issue.
if you got those two as ok's, then u are a lucky dog...

Re: Vid Card Question
If the motherboard is already a PCI-E board then there wont be any issues with it. What size of PSU did they stick in the case? I was talking to a buddy of mine last night that has an XPS that is around 2 years old and his came with a 600W PSU. If you have a 550W or larger then your PSU shouldn't be a problem.

My current card is PCI-E. I'll check the PSU when I open it up.

Re: Vid Card Question
I opened the case and there is plenty of room. The card is also listed on Dell's website as a potential upgrade for my PC so I should be good to go. They are pretty popular right now and seem to be out of stock. I'll keep an eye out for when they are available again.
Thanks to all for the advice.
PS I also found out that my PC isn't as old as I thought. I thought I got it in '04, but I got it in '05.

Re: Vid Card Question
The GeForce 8800 GT comes in 4 flavors. The price range is $30-50 depending on where I look. Of course they are out of stock everywhere now, but that isn't a problem. I don't mind the wait. My question -- is there that much difference to pay a premium? See pretty numbers following:
(CORE CLOCK SPEED) ( MEMORY CLOCK SPEED) (MEMORY BANDWIDTH) (SHADER CLOCK SPEED)
Base Version 600 MHz 1800MHz 57.6GB/sec 1500 MHz
Superclocked 650 1900 60.8 1620
KO 675 1950 62.4 1674
SSC 700 2000 64.0 1728
I'm not sure I'd notice a difference between the lot.
EDIT: It doesn't hold formatting very well.
