Today's Highlight

Post by [JiF]Mike »

Sorry I didn't post a message with this video but I had to leave for a bit so just posted it quick. My wife filmed this today at our house. We were taking some trees down and this one came down before we wanted it too. :( The damage isn't as bad as it could have been, had the tree fallen directly on the house. As it is, it fell about 3-4 ft from the house and the branches did quite a bit of damage. Surprisingly no windows were broken, but our front door will need to be replaced, along with the awning. We will also have to patch a pretty sizable hole in the roof and fix some interior stuff that happened. The tree was big enough that it also reached our fence that we let the dog out in and parts of it will also need to be replaced as it was crushed. It also took out another tree that missed the house by a few feet as well. If we hadn't had two separate lengths of chain, plus a long rope with a block and tackle and 3 people on it, this would have been much much worse. Everyone is staying till tomorrow to help get the repairs done. My grandfather was in charge of all this and did all the cutting and planning. He feels pretty bad but is gonna make it right. The big positive is that no one was hurt.

The cleanup took a long time, this was a much bigger tree than most of us really realized. Our guess at quickly counting the rings put the tree at nearly 100 or more years old. Taking this tree and the one next to it down has been something we've wanted to do since we moved in. Check out the photo's in my gallery and you'll get an idea of how big this tree really was. We cut the tree up into 8ft sections because I have a friend with a mill who will make lumber out of most of it for us. :)

Wow. I have a big 65' double white pine I have to take down. It is about 15 feet from both buildings on my property. I bought a chainsaw and was trying to visualize myself taking it down. You just convinced me to hire somebody.

The scariest part was earlier in the day. We had a big chain on this tree to keep it from going into the house. My grandfather was cutting and had gone through quite a bit, when the chain broke and itthe whole thing shifted back towards the house. A hook had bent straight and let go and it was very windy, of course the wind was blowing twards the house. Watching the top of the tree was very scary as it swung back and fourth a lot. We quickly got another chain on it but realized that one just wasn't gonna be enough for this monster. The only problem was we didn't have enough chains left to put up another chain to hold it. So my Uncle and Father ran to Lowes and bought every bit Lowes had in stock. It took them hour to get there and back...that was one of the longest hours of my life.

I have another story for today...as we took 3 more tree's down, and another tree about 5 feet from the house...leaning twards the house....let's just say the chain broke yet again. :( I may get around to posting the video...but I'm pretty tired...been a long couple days.

Glad to hear no one was hurt.

In the before picture I saw some power lines, how close were they to the tree?

Very close, we did have a few branches laying on them but no damage was done and we were able to easily pull them off ourselves. We have a separate meter on our barn, but we had those lines taken down on Friday because we laid a different tree right where they were. :) In total we took down 4 Pines, and 2 Oak, none were more then 15 ft from the house.

I'm not sure if you were using ropes or what not but we cleared, if i were to guess about 100 tree, in my back yard for my brother to build a house we had a big old sugar maple that was on its last legs so we cut her down. It was about 5 feet from the house so we tied some ropes up to it and use a chain saw. We the trucks pulled on it as my brother was cutting and it came down w/o a hitch. But I would recommend trying to use ropes and wedges. Or you could pay to have a professional do it but thats no fun at all :D

Whenever I get ready to do something like that I hear that song from the Vonage commercials in my head..
Wooo-hooo... wooo-hooo-hooo... Sometimes it scares me out of it.. sometimes not. Glad that no one was hurt and the damage wasn't too severe!
