Help! computer won't start to windows

Post by [JiF]corn »

After playing last night i went and started a defragmentation on my hard drive.
I fell asleep and woke up this morning with the following error.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Anyone have any information on this or a web site i can go to?
This is my gaming computer and i don't want to lose all my stuff and have to reload everything. :(

hmmmm... did you try all the other options first (ie. insert your windows CD back in and try to reinstall, etc.)?

sounds like everything was great until the defrag, which usually means a file gets screwed up, deleted, moved, etc.

b4 going to LAST likely option (ie bad drive), go thru the list that Tissue sent in the link.

if you already have done this, ignore all my comments above... ;)

LT

ps. reason why I said this, something similar happened to me - went out and bought new harddrive, and found out I didnt need to (simple file issue).

good luck!!

i'm going to get it checked out for sure before i scrap the hard drive.
I tried some of the solutions on that website and tried a recovery disc and it wouldn't let me.
It said to shut down before iminent failure of the S.M.A.R.T drive.

This is way over my head.
It was made in 2004, so it may be time to get another computer.

Thanx for the help!

P.S> i added that website to my favs.

SMART is a Self monitoring utility to warn you of imitate HDD failure.
You can turn it off in the BIOS, but I would recommend you back up your stuff like now. Safe mode if you can and backup all the stuff that is important to you. Your probably losing the drive or controller.
I would then boot from the CD and run chkdsk. Something like chkdsk C: /F /R (not sure of the exact syntax).

I'm going to take it down to get it checked out.
I played last night on my backup computer and really like it.
